Learning Logs

Learning Logs are a new venture for Grazeley Primary School from September 2014.  We talked to parents, children and staff about how homework could be more meaningful and useful to children over the last year.  We wanted to ensure that home learning built on the learning that had happened over the week and allowed children the creativity to record their learning in their own personal way. Please see the description below to find out more:

Learning Logs are a unique, personalised learning resource for children. In the Learning Log, your child can record their responses to learning challenges set by their teachers. A learning log is not a record of what your child has ‘done’; it is a record that shows what they have ‘learnt’.

As the Learning Log is personal, your child is given the freedom to express their understanding any way they choose. Your child will be able to use many methods to complete their learning log projects.

Please encourage your child to use their imagination in completing the tasks. Your child may want to take or include photos, cut things out, paint, draw, colour, use ICT or use other ideas to present their ideas. It is up to them to choose; they can complete the project however they wish.

Giving children freedom allows them to think creatively and promote independent learning. This level of freedom acts as a great motivator for children as they begin to collaborate with their peers, start to share ideas and understanding.

Suggested time for children to spend on weekly home learning tasks:

We would recommend that children spend approximately the following amount of time on their Learning Logs each week:

Oak Class: 1 hour

Cedar Class: 45 mins

Willow Class: 30 mins

Hazel Class 20 – 30 mins

Chestnut Class 15 - 20 mins

Please support us in ensuring children recognise the value of these activities and build upon their learning at home. Thank you.
